Granny flats exemption: Guidance and resources

The granny flat building consent exemption allows small, standalone dwellings of up to 70 square metres to be constructed without a building consent, provided that:

• the design is simple and complies with the Building Code
• the homeowner notifies the local council before construction commences and once the work is completed
• the building work is carried out or supervised by licensed building professionals
• all exemption conditions are fully met
